Abstract

A part of the book “Best Practices for Hospital & Health-System Pharmacy:Position and Guidance Documents of ASHP,” 2012-2013 Edition, edited byBruce Hawkins is presented. (ISSN: 15558975). It details the therapeuticguidelines of the American Society of Health-Sytem Pharmacists (ASHP) onantimicrobial prophylaxis in surgery between page 582-667. It highlights thecurrent clinical evidence, improvements and recommendations from practitionersfor the standardized effective antimicrobial prophylaxis regimens foradult and pediatric patients. The new guideline reflects substantial changesfrom the guidelines published in 1999. Pages 632-633 of the chapter includeantimicrobial prophylaxis of the breast and plastic surgery proceduresin detail. Highlights of those changes in recommendations of antimicrobialprophylaxis in breast surgery which take part in ASHP 2012-2013 report areoutlined here.
