ABSTRACT

PURPOSE:

This research was carried out to evaluate the eff ect of education given by nursing students on womens’ knowledge and practice of breast cancer- breast self examination in a public training center.

METHOD:

The research was conducted on 93 women who attended a public training center and reached on pretest and posttest. Data was collected by individual information form and breast cancer-BSE knowledge test. Before the education program has started, breast cancer-BSE knowledge test was applied as pre-test. Then education related to breast cancer-BSE was applied to women. Breast cancer-BSE knowledge test was applied secondly, and education was repeated. Breast cancer-BSE knowledge test was applied as posttest four weeks later than last education and it was evaluated the BSE practice of women.

RESULTS:

It was found that the average point of pretest of women was 4.48, average point of second test was 5.57 and average point of posttest was 7.27. There was a statistically signifi cant diff erence in between both the average point of breast cancer-BSE knowledge pretest and second test and between second test and post test (p<0.001). 4.3 % of women said that performed regularyl BSE before education, it was elavated to 51.6 % after education (p<0.05). Conclusions: Knowledge and practice on breast cancer-BSE of women was insuffi cient. However, it was improve knowledge and practice on Breast cancer-BSE of women after education.
