ABSTRACT

PURPOSE:

To review the benign breast lesions that show posterior acoustic shadowing on ultrasound examination.

MATERIALS and METHODS:

Biopsy performed benign breast lesions with sonographic acoustic shadowing were reviewed retrospectively. Frequencies of lesions were calculated on the basis of histological type.

RESULTS:

Frequencies of the benign lesions were fi brodenoma 32% (29), sclerosing adenosis 24% (22), fat necrosis 18.5% (17), focal fi brosis 9% (8), radial scar 8% (7), normal breast tissue 5.5% (5), and diabetic mastopathy 3% (3) respectively.

CONCLUSION:

In this study, most frequent benign lesions with acoustic shadowing were fi broadenomas and sclerosing adenosis. Acoustic shadowing is a suspicious ultrasound fi nding that commonly associates malignancy. To remember the benign lesion types this shows acoustic shadowing may help to evaluate the radiology-pathology accordance after biopsy.
