ABSTRACT

Purpose:

This study was made to determine of female teachers concerning breast cancer and breast self-examination (BSE) information, attitudes and behavior.

Methods:

The research was performed during working hours in the 20 primary school, 7 in high school in Ödemiş (İzmir). 2004-2005 academic year in this school who are served 336 female theachers of the research Universe, the number of individuals selected according to the formula known width of the sample 176 female teachers constituted the study sample. As sample selection method, the stratified sample selection was used. Data of the research was obtained questionnaire generated by researchers and agreed to study face to face interview with teachers between 7 March and 7 April 2005. Chisquare and percentages were used in evaluation of data.

Results:

Surveyed 52,8 % of the teachers’i in the 31-40 age group, 84,7 % married, 17,6 % the fat, 8 % reguler exercise did, 11,3 % were found breast cancer in nearly, 38,4 % were examined by an expert because of the mass and underarm swelling, 62,5 % have known in the breast self-examination (BSE), 55,7 % of those who know say “have not made the BSE”, When questioned, How BSE are being done and showed, 17,9 % of them have done correctly, have been determined.

Conclusion:

The data evaluation in result; The teachers have insufficient information of about breast cancer and BSE, haven’t known how to do BSE, most of who know it make mistakes and didn’t receive an adequate education, has been identified.
