The oncoplastic techniques those are helpful in the reduction of the breast cancer with macromastia and the removing of malign tumor at the same time and their late results are not well known, yet. In our study, we have reported the late results of the 116 patients with breast cancer treated with this technique.
MATERIAL AND METHOD:
The reduction mammaplasty and ipsilateral axillary dissection was performed in 116 patients with breast cancer with macromastia.Necessary Adjuvant therapies was applied according to the stage of the cancer.(Chemotherapy and Hormonotherapy was applied with standard indications according to histopathological data and receptor status.Radiotherapy was applied to all cases regularly.)We have treated and followed up the patients between 1993 and 2004, regarding the stage of the disease. The cosmetic results, local recurrence rates, disease free and overall survival were analysed, retrospectively.
RESULTS:
The local recurrence rates were 0% for stage I, 10,9% for stage II and 19,2% for stage III.
Regarding the stage of the disease, 10-year disease free survival rates were 100% in stage I, 89,1% in stage II and 46,1% in stage III patients respectively. The overall survival rates were determined as 100% for stage I, 89,1% for stage II and 53,8% for stage III. The cosmetic results of 85% of patients were good to excellent.
CONCLUSION:
Our results indicates that breast reduction operations are as effective and safe as standard surgical procedures in patients with macromastia and breast cancer.
